Job Objective / Purpose of the Job


  • The Welding Engineer is responsible for overseeing welding operations, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and optimizing welding processes for quality, efficiency, and safety.
  • This role involves developing welding procedures, coordinating with project teams, conducting inspections, and troubleshooting welding-related issues on EPC projects.

Job Duties / Responsibilities / Accountabilities

  • Reports directly to the Senior Welding Engineer and works under his guidance for upgrading & maintaining the Welding activities in client organization.
  • Maintains client code stamp welding procedures as well as project specific welding procedure/testing requirements.
  • Perform all Welding Procedures Qualifications and Welder/Welding Operator Performance Qualification tests. Organizes any re-qualification or re-validation and acts upon issues for disqualification.
  • Monitor all Welding activities and PWHT processes taking assistance from Senior Welding Engineer. And maintains all data records and documents related to welding controls, for coded/project specific requirements. And seeks guidance from Senior Welding Engineer in case of any technicalities.
  • Works in hand with the Production Welding Supervisor, for various and project specific technical Training of all client welders & welding operators, for the company’s technical training as a part of continuous improvement.
  • Liaise with the Production Welding Supervisor and Welding Consumable Controller and monitor the Welding consumable Storage and Handling procedures being maintained in the client’s shop floors/sites

Key Performance Indicators / Performance Goals
(Preliminary – to be agreed):

  • Ensures strict compliance to code specifications/standards.
  • Review project specifications for welding process, base metals, filler metals, heat treatment, and NDE requirements; select appropriate WPS, and if required, qualify a new WPS Ensures products meet the quality requirement and clients’ satisfaction.
  • Develop and qualify new WPS/PQR when required.
  • Ensures proactive calibration of testing and measuring equipment for validity and reliability.
  • Prepare and submit the selected WPS(s) and supporting PQR(s), welder qualification records, and any additional information (e.g., weld maps, weld logs, etc.) to the Quality Manager for approval.
  • Monitor and evaluate weld repair rate/ reject rate and directs ways to maintain company targeted rate.
  • Ensure full compliance of procedures including safety standards.

  • Internal: Quality Inspectors, Production, Projects, Engineering
  • External: Client reps

Job Specification
Educational Qualification:

  • Candidates should possess a University Degree/HND in an Engineering discipline

Professional Qualification:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in welding engineering, preferably within an EPC or heavy fabrication environment.
  • Professional Certifications (CSWIP 3.1/3.2 or AWS CWI/CWE, Certified Welding Engineer (CWE)–AWS, Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)–AWS, International Welding Engineer (IWE) – IIW) etc.
  • NDT Level II/III Certification (ASNT or equivalent)
  • Strong knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW, etc.), metallurgy, and material properties.
  • Proficiency in welding codes and standards (AWS, ASME, API, ISO 3834, etc.).
  • Experience with NDT methods (UT, RT, MT, PT) and welding inspection techniques.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and welding simulation software is an advantage.

Experience:

  • Must have a depth knowledge of Metallurgy of Steel and must have knowledge of various Welding & Fabrication Codes, such as ASME Sec IX and Sec VIII div 1 & 2, Sec II-A, B, & C; BS PD 5500; AWS D1.1 l; API codes
  • Minimum 5 years Welding and Fabrication experience in Pressure Vessel & Structural fabrication welding related to Onshore and Offshore field oppressions

Key Competencies Requirements:
Functional/Technical:

  • Ability to develop and qualify welding procedure specifications (WPS) and related procedure qualification records (PQR), supervise and document welder qualifications, interact with welding department (manufacturing and repair), work with welders, suppliers, 3rd party NDE personnel, to meet the user's requirements.

Managerial:

  • Good communication and team building skills – well able to lead and gain the respect of both own team members and 3rd parties (both internally and externally).
  • Ability to improvise/prioritise with little notice without losing attention to detail.
  • Proven track record of managing multicultural teams.

Behavioural:

  • Self-starter, results-driven and focussed on delivery of quality deliverables on time and within budget.
  • Able to hold own ground when challenged but can present a balanced view in putting arguments forward.

Salary
N24,000,000 - N32,000,000 / Annum.
